Artha India Ventures Announces First Close of ₹250 Crore for Second Micro VC Fund Amid Early-Stage Funding Recovery

Artha India Ventures has announced the successful first close of ₹250 crore for its second flagship fund, Artha Venture Fund II (AVF II), marking a significant milestone in India's recovering micro VC landscape. The fund targets a total corpus of ₹500 crore with an additional ₹100 crore green-shoe option, demonstrating strong investor confidence in the firm's conviction-led investment approach.

Strategic Investment Focus

AVF II will invest in 36 seed-stage startups across four key themes: premium consumption, fintech infrastructure, applied artificial intelligence, and deep tech. The fund will deploy initial cheques of approximately ₹4 crore, with follow-on investments ranging from ₹8-16 crore, targeting 15-20% ownership in portfolio companies through a four-year deployment cycle.

"AVF II is launching at a time when the startup ecosystem is undergoing a reset," said Anirudh A. Damani, Managing Partner of Artha Venture Fund. The fund's launch coincides with a challenging period for early-stage funding, with India recording fewer than 100 seed investments per month for eight consecutive months—the lowest levels in nearly a decade.

Market Timing and Opportunity

The current market environment has created unique opportunities for discerning investors. The graduation rate from Seed to Series A, historically 12-13% over 36 months, has dropped to as low as 5-6% in recent months, indicating a capital-starved early-stage ecosystem.

"What's exciting for us as investors is that this environment filters out the noise. The tourist founders are gone; what's left are serious entrepreneurs building sustainable, capital-efficient businesses," Damani explained. The fund manager sees parallels with successful vintage years from 2016 and 2017, when Artha achieved a 111% IRR and 16x multiple from its 2017 portfolio.

Domestic Capital Participation

The fund's capital composition reflects strong domestic participation, with nearly 80% of funding coming from Indian limited partners, including family offices and successful entrepreneurs from Artha's previous investments. International investors comprise the remaining 20%, demonstrating balanced global and local backing.

Early backers include established business families and successful entrepreneurs: the Shahi Group, Narendra Karnawat (founder of Glance Finance), DSP Family Office, and several founders from Artha's earlier portfolio who have achieved successful exits.

Portfolio Strategy and Track Record

Artha India Ventures manages over ₹1,500 crore across multiple funds with 135+ investments and 34 exits to date. The firm's first fund portfolio includes notable companies such as Agnikul Cosmos, Everest Fleet, LenDenClub, Daalchini, InstaAstro, and GetWork, many of which have become category-defining leaders in their respective sectors.

The fund's investment strategy prioritizes fewer, higher-conviction bets on post-seed, post-revenue startups raising ₹4-10 crore rounds. This approach focuses on supporting founders with deep conviction, efficient capital usage, and clear revenue visibility.

Ecosystem Implications

The successful fund raise signals growing confidence in India's startup ecosystem recovery. With over 150 Limited Partners, co-investors, and global partners, Artha's platform provides portfolio companies access to mentorship, strategic guidance, and market connections beyond capital.

"Our goal is to double down on companies showing deep founder conviction, efficient capital usage, and clear revenue visibility. AVF II is not chasing volume; it's chasing velocity—concentrated capital behind exceptional founders," Damani emphasized.

Market Outlook

The fund's timing aligns with expectations of a market recovery, with 2025 positioning as a potential once-in-a-decade opportunity for value-conscious investors. The emphasis on unit economics, sustainable growth, and capital efficiency reflects lessons learned from the previous funding cycle's excesses.

For India's startup ecosystem, Artha's successful fund raise provides crucial early-stage capital during a challenging period, supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs building technology-driven solutions for India and global markets.
