SpeakX.ai Raises $16 Million Led by WestBridge Capital as AI-Powered EdTech Makes Profitable Comeback

AI-powered English learning startup SpeakX.ai has successfully raised $16 million (approximately ₹142 crore) in a pre-Series B funding round led by WestBridge Capital, with participation from Goodwater Capital and existing investor Elevation Capital, marking a significant milestone in the edtech sector's recovery from the post-pandemic slump.

Transformation Story

The funding represents a remarkable turnaround for founder Arpit Mittal, whose previous venture YellowClass focused on children's extracurricular activities during the pandemic but struggled as schools reopened. In 2023, Mittal made the difficult decision to pivot, reducing his team from 200 to 20 employees and rebuilding the platform around AI-driven spoken English learning.

"The hard pivot came at a cost. I had to bring down my team from 200 to 20. We had about $1.5 million left and my cofounder also decided to move out," Mittal shared, highlighting the challenges of transformation in the competitive edtech landscape.

Profitable AI-First Model

What sets SpeakX apart in the recovering edtech sector is its achievement of profitability within just one year of the pivot. The platform currently generates ₹5 crore in monthly revenue with ₹1.5 crore in monthly profit, serving over 200,000 active paying subscribers from a total user base exceeding 10 million.

The company's AI-native platform uses generative artificial intelligence to provide personalized spoken English tutoring through simulated one-on-one conversations. Users receive instant feedback on pronunciation, fluency, and tone, with the platform transitioning from OpenAI's enterprise API to Google Gemini for faster, more responsive learning experiences.

Technology and Market Positioning

SpeakX operates on a subscription-based model targeting India's vast market of English language learners, particularly in the ₹12,000-50,000 monthly income bracket. The platform addresses a critical need in a country where English proficiency directly impacts career opportunities and social mobility.

"English speaking is closely tied to doing well in life, as it directly affects job prospects. It is also closely linked to social identity. Because of these factors, people have a strong desire to communicate well in English," Mittal explained.

Regional Expansion Strategy

With 70% of current users being Hindi speakers, SpeakX plans to leverage the fresh funding to expand into regional languages including Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, and Malayalam within the next year. This expansion strategy aligns with India's linguistic diversity and the growing demand for English learning in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Approximately 80% of the new capital will enhance SpeakX's AI and speech-recognition technology, with the remaining 20% allocated for regional language expansion and team growth.

Investor Confidence and Edtech Recovery

The successful funding round reflects growing investor confidence in profitable, technology-first edtech models. "WestBridge came in because we've demonstrated that a digital, AI-first company can be built and scaled profitably," Mittal noted.

Sandeep Singhal, Managing Partner at WestBridge Capital, commented: "Language proficiency continues to be a key driver of economic mobility. SpeakX's AI-native platform is opening new pathways for millions of learners to overcome barriers with speed and scale."

Market Outlook and Growth Trajectory

The funding comes as India's edtech sector shows signs of recovery after a challenging 2022-2023 period marked by reduced investment and company closures. SpeakX's success demonstrates the viability of focused, profitable business models over high-burn growth strategies.

The company targets ₹100 crore in annual EBITDA by 2026 and aims to build a ₹300-400 million business in India within the next 2-3 years, positioning itself as a category-defining player in AI-powered language learning.
