Ola Electric Launches BESS Platform Amid Market Share Erosion: Can Energy Storage Revive Growth?

OLA'S Entry into ₹1 Trillion BESS Market

Ola Electric announced its entry into India's Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) market with the launch of Ola Shakti on October 15, 2025, marking a strategic diversification beyond electric two-wheelers. The company's stock surged over 15% in three trading sessions following the announcement, as investors welcomed the expansion into the energy storage segment projected to reach ₹3 trillion by 2030.

Ola Shakti represents India's first fully indigenously designed residential BESS solution, leveraging the company's advanced 4680 Bharat Cell technology and utilizing existing Gigafactory production capabilities. The product launched with four configurations (1.5 kWh, 3 kWh, 5.2 kWh, and 9.1 kWh) at introductory prices ranging from ₹29,999 to ₹1,59,999 for the first 10,000 units, with reservations opening at ₹999.

Business Overview

Founded in 2019 by Bhavish Aggarwal, Ola Electric rapidly became India's leading electric two-wheeler manufacturer, capturing over 50% market share in FY24. The company went public in August 2024 with an IPO that valued it at approximately $7 billion, making it India's first pure-play EV listing.

However, the company's journey has been turbulent. Ola Electric's market dominance has eroded significantly—its market share plummeted from 46% in June 2024 to just 19% by June 2025, as legacy automakers TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto gained ground. The company now ranks third in India's EV two-wheeler market, down from its previous leadership position.

Ola Electric's revenue trajectory from FY22 to FY25 shows initial hypergrowth followed by decline, while losses continue to widen despite reaching revenue peak in FY24

Financial Analysis

Ola Electric's financial performance reveals a company in aggressive growth mode but struggling with profitability:

Revenue Trajectory:

  • FY22: ₹373 crores

  • FY23: ₹2,631 crores (605% YoY growth)

  • FY24: ₹5,010 crores (90% YoY growth)

  • FY25: ₹4,514 crores (-10% YoY decline)

Profitability Challenges:
The company has never been profitable, with losses widening year-over-year:

  • FY22: Net loss of ₹784 crores

  • FY23: Net loss of ₹1,472 crores

  • FY24: Net loss of ₹1,584 crores

  • FY25: Net loss of ₹2,276 crores (44% increase)

Q4 FY25 Performance:
The most recent quarterly results paint a concerning picture. Revenue plunged 57% YoY to ₹649 crores while net loss widened to ₹870 crores from ₹416 crores in Q4 FY24. Operating margins remained deeply negative at -101.4%, reflecting the company's struggle to achieve operational leverage.

Key Financial Metrics:

  • Gross Margin (FY25): -38% (negative), though showing sequential improvement from -51.3% in FY23

  • EBITDA: Consistently negative across all periods

  • Cash Position: The company recently secured a ₹1,700 crore debt facility to support operations

  • Market Capitalization: Crashed from ₹49,651 crores at IPO to approximately ₹12,500 crores, representing a 75% decline in less than a year

Strategic Initiatives

Ola Electric has launched Project Lakshay aimed at drastically reducing monthly cash burn and improving gross margins from 19% to 36.5% by Q2 FY26. The company plans to achieve EBITDA breakeven at below 25,000 units per month through operational efficiencies.

The BESS launch represents a natural extension of the company's core competencies. Ola expects annual BESS consumption to scale to 5 GWh in coming years, leveraging existing 4680 cell technology and nationwide distribution network of over 4,000 stores without incremental capital investment.

OLA'S Challenges and Outlook

Ola Electric faces multiple headwinds:

  1. Quality Concerns: Persistent customer complaints about product reliability, breakdowns, and service delays plague the brand's reputation

  2. Competitive Pressure: TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto have captured significant market share with improved products and extensive dealer networks

  3. Regulatory Scrutiny: Government investigation into sales data accuracy and consumer rights violations

  4. Financial Sustainability: Path to profitability remains unclear with continued heavy cash burn

Despite challenges, the BESS opportunity could provide a second growth vector. With India's energy storage market projected to grow exponentially and Ola's established manufacturing capabilities, the company is positioning itself as an integrated energy solutions provider rather than just a vehicle manufacturer.
